Narcan Education

To use Narcan (naloxone) effectively, follow these steps to administer it during an opioid overdose and ensure the safety of the individual.

Steps to Administer Narcan Nasal Spray:

1. Recognize Signs of an Overdose: Look for symptoms such as unresponsiveness, slow or no breathing, and blue or pale skin. If you suspect an overdose, act quickly.
2. Prepare the Narcan:

Remove Narcan from its box and peel back the tab to open the nasal spray package. Do not test the device before use.

3. Administer the Dose:

Position the Person: Lay the person on their back. Tilt their head back slightly to open the airway.

Insert the Nozzle: Hold the Narcan nasal spray with your thumb on the bottom of the plunger and your first and middle fingers on either side of the nozzle. Insert the tip of the nozzle into on nostril until your fingers are against the bottom of the person’s nose.

Push the Plunger: Firmly press the plunger to deliver the full dose of Narcan into the nostril.

4. Call for Emergency Help: Immediately call 911 or have someone else call for emergency medical assistance. Follow any instructions given by the operator.
5. Monitor the Person: Roll the person onto their side to prevent choking. Keep an eye on their breathing and responsiveness. If they do not respond within 2-3 minutes, administer a second dose in the other nostril using a new Narcan spray.
6. Repeat if Necessary: If the person does not wake up or start breathing normally after the second dose, you can continue to administer additional doses every 2-3 minutes until emergency help arrives or the begin to respond.

Important Considerations

Stay with the Person: Remain with the individual until medical help arrives. Naloxone is a temporary treatment, and its effects can wear off in 30 to 90 minutes, potentially leading to a return of overdose symptoms.

Post-Administration Care: Once the person wakes up, explains what happened and advise them not to use any drugs, as they may still be at risk of overdose.

By following these instructions, you can effectively use Narcan to help someone experiencing an opioid overdose and potentially save their life. Always ensure to seek professional medical help immediately.
